John Gyford (19 April 1939 – 23 October 2024)

John Gyford, a giant of Essex Labour Party, has died aged 85.

John was elected to Braintree District Council in 1983, representing Witham North Ward continuously for 28 years. He served as leader of the council between 1995 and 2000, and was an Essex County Councillor from 1989 to 2001, representing Witham Southern. He held the post of secretary to the Local Government Association Labour group, and he stood as the parliamentary candidate for the Braintree constituency in the 1979 general election.

A former academic and Labour historian, John lectured in local government at University College London, and wrote many articles and books on the changing nature of local politics. As a councillor he was respected across the region for his knowledge of local government, and gave many interesting talks to local Labour History groups, including on the history of Witham Constituency and on former Maldon MP and alleged Soviet spy Tom Driberg.

David Mann, a former Braintree District Council colleague of John’s, paid tribute to his knowledge and commitment, saying: “John lived and breathed local government. He was not only an academic – he was a passionate activist. He was well ahead of his time in recognising the potential contribution local goverment could make as opposed to central goverment, and in seeking to extend its influence in the local community.” He went on to praise his exceptional leadership and the huge contribution he made to Braintree District.

Other figures from Essex Labour also gave warm tributes. Julie Young, a former colleague on Essex County Council, said: “The lasting memory of John will be of a man of intelligence and integrity. He will be much missed.” Eileen Davidson MBE, former Chair of East of England Labour, remembered how “he was always available for some sound guidance and advice to less experienced Labour members and councillors.” And Ivan Henderson, leader of the Labour Group on Essex County Council, said: “John was an expert on the history of Essex County Council, and colleagues learned so much from him. He served his community with commitment and integrity for many years. He will be greatly missed.”

John remained an avid Ipswich Town FC fan his entire life. He leaves behind his wife Janet, also a long-standing member of the Labour Party and a well-known Witham historian, and his two children, Phil and Sue.
