Thanks to the Labour majority on Witham Town Council, construction has finally begun on a new community centre in the town.
On Thursday 5 June, councillors joined construction company SEH French and design consultancy Ingleton Wood for a ceremonial ground-breaking at the Haygreen Road site, celebrating the start of this long-awaited project.
First promised over 25 years ago, this centre had been left undelivered by the previous Conservative administration. But since Labour councillors were voted in to run the administration of Witham Town Council in 2023, the project has been a top priority for the council.
Council leader Paul Heath commented “After thorough and detailed preparation work to ensure the best quality and value for residents, we’ve now broken ground at the site. This community centre will be a great asset for the town.”
The new centre will include a versatile hall, kitchen, bar area, and changing rooms for sports teams that use the adjacent pitch.
Heath added, “It’s a familiar story: after years of stagnation under Tory politicians — both locally and nationally — residents have trusted Labour to deliver the goods. Promise made; promise kept.”
